Elizabeth Goudge Children's Books

Many people know Elizabeth Goudge primarily as a children's author.  She wrote ten books specifically for children although many an adult has enjoyed reading these. She was awarded the Carnegie medal  for The Little White Horse . Elizabeth Goudge's children's books continue to delight. Since J. K. Rowling of Harry Potter fame said in an interview that Elizabeth Goudge's Little White Horse was her favorite story as a child, that title has found new popularity among the young.

But Elizabeth Goudge penned a number of other children's books that have remained favorites: Smoky House, the Blue Hills or Henrietta's House, I Saw Three Ships and Make Believe all get high marks. And many a parent or grandparent has excerpted parts of Pilgrims Inn or other of Goudge's adult novels to read aloud to a child.

Elizabeth Goudge had an appreciation for many different types of children and she write of sensitively of both 'doers' and 'dreamers'. In fact, Goudge is one of the very few who portrays sensitive boys in a favorable light - though most of these characters populate her adult novels.
